This painting depicts a scene of the morning train. The strong morning light filters through the window and permeates to the rest of the painting. The passenger is seen closing her eyes, presumably taking a nap while on her way to work. Sleep can be said to be the ultimate state of withdrawal into the self. This slumber, however, must be disingenuous. The passenger must be aware on some level of her surroundings, and she knows that at some point, she must get off the train. She retreats into herself, but remains simultaneously tethered to reality.
