This painting began with the purple underpainting, which encapsulates the feeling of the train at night. I decided to use bright green as the secondary color, providing an artificial light which reflects unnaturally on the figure’s face and hands. The passenger is depicted leaning on her bag and using her phone. On the train, phones often assume the role of “objects of absorption” which the passengers escape to in the time it takes to arrive at their destination.
